Whether you plan to begin the main story afterwards or have already finished it, this collection enriches the scenes mentioned in the primary books.

Mother of Wolves

A vampire Queen and a mad scientist set out to create an army of loyal guards, but instead they unleash a primal fury unlike anything the world has ever seen.
Kidnapped, tortured and terrorised, Eve awaits her inevitable death with a fierce resilience. But little does she know that instead of death, she will be reborn. However, she immediately finds herself and her kin in imminent danger of extinction before they even have a chance to venture into the world.
With the help of an unlikely ally, can she save them before it is too late?
My thoughts…
This short novella introduces Eve and Rhett‘s story of how they came to be what they are, and also how they first met. I’ve no idea what the main story entails, or if these characters will play a part in the main book.
I would really like to follow Eve’s story. She is a quick learner with natural leadership and deep empathy, making her an engaging MC and therefore a good introduction to the Dark Creatures series.
But, I’m a sucker for HEA, and this short novella is the opposite of it, which left me wanting more, and I can only hope the main series provides a glimpse into their lives.
Son of a Vampire

He is dead. Life is just about to begin.
Torn, bleeding and dying from the battlefields of France, Calin Sheridan finds himself back in London. But while the city remains familiar, war has changed him in ways he couldn’t imagine.
This working class lad turned soldier, finds himself in the lap of luxury, but do the palatial trappings hide a more sinister and deadly world?
Can he control his new primal urges and find a way back, or is his old life and love lost to him forever?
My thoughts…
Just like the first novella in this Dark Creature prequel, it ends without a closure and a slightly sad story. This time, it’s about Calin Sheridan and how he became a vampire.
Unlike Eve‘s story, though, I couldn’t connect to the character, perhaps because it’s way too short. But, I do like to find out how he fares in this new world, especially with all the wealth his sire, Polidori, provided him and the plan to travel away from London.
That’s it, if the offer still stands, because Calin clearly broke the trust. Or, perhaps that’s not the point at all because in the end, he did manage not to kill anyone.
Man and Wolf

When Michael is sent to liaise with a werewolf pack on behalf of the shadowy Blackwatch organisation, he finds he might have bitten off more than he can chew.
Future Alpha, Freya, is haunted by her past and desperate to break from the pack, but her mother is determined that she will see her birthright through.
When their two worlds collide, Michael and Freya will be forced to learn more about themselves, and each other, than they would ever have believed possible.
My thoughts…
We didn’t have to wait for the main series to read about Eve, the MC introduced in the first Dark Creatures prequel. We never found out what happened to her after she escaped, but this third novella makes it clear she did well, all things considered.
The story’s main characters are Freya and Michael. The opening is a little slow, but Freya remains intriguing. Something drives her to act rebelliously and to resist the Alpha responsibilities that seem destined for her. The key revelation about her comes a few chapters before the end.
Michael belongs to an organisation called Blackwatch, which we haven’t encountered before. It’s intriguing to learn what they do, and I hope the main series expands on them, because this novella only scratches the surface.
Compared with the two earlier novellas, this one ends on a somewhat happier note. Still, what happens after the escape remains a mystery. A story I hope the main series will shed some light on.
Call of the Grimoire

Andrea Green might work for one of the most secret organisations in the world, but fighting the forces of evil comes mostly in the form of endless paperwork and mundane office banter.
But when a routine inspection yields unexpected results, the fallout reveals a shattering secret.
My thoughts…
This final prequel to the Dark Creatures series takes us briefly into the organisation introduced in Man and Wolf, the Blackwatch. The MC this time is Andrea (Rey), whose mysterious heritage becomes another compelling point, which I hope the main series will provide an answer to. What will happen to her in the future, and how powerful might she become? That uncertainty kept me hooked.
Familiar faces from earlier prequels also return in this short novella, including Jessop (Michael’s colleague), Calin, and a mention of Polidori, Calin’s sire.
Overall, these prequels are intriguing enough that I can’t wait to read the main books. By the way, is the MC in the Dark Creatures series the same Narissa that Oliver, Rey’s colleague, has a crush on? It’s time to read the series and find out!
