Endless Knight

New York is my prison.

Once a sought-after assassin, a single error in judgment landed me in servitude to House August, the most powerful vampire family in North America. Now I use my special brand of magic as a member of their security team, fighting monsters in the city and keeping the royal family’s many enemies at bay.

When the queen summons me for an assignment and offers my freedom in return, I want to jump at the chance—until she tells me what the assignment is.

Like a valiant knight, I am to escort her son from the family’s stronghold in Florida back to New York, which would be difficult enough without my messy romantic history with the rogue prince.

I accept the job because my freedom means more than my wounded pride.

Darkness and monsters stand between us and our destination. Thankfully, I’ve never been afraid of either one.

I soon discover there’s more at stake than the return of the prodigal son. Even if we survive our enemies, I’m not sure I’ll survive the journey with the vampire who broke my heart.

Post-apocalyptic world, adventure, badass FMC, adorable sidekick and playboy Vampire prince

If these five elements appeal to you, pick up Midnight Empire: The Restoration Series. It is the second series set in the Midnight Empire world. If you have not read the first, Midnight Empire: The Tower Series, I recommend starting there. It shares many of the same strengths, although it is set in the United Kingdom rather than North America.

Britt Miller is a fascinating heroine. Known as Britt the Bloody, Britt the Blood Witch, Britt the Nightcrawler and the Deathbringer, she has endured a difficult childhood because of the type of witch she was and her unique abilities. Cast out of her coven, she later ends up bound to House August as an indentured servant in their security division.

When an opportunity arises to break free of her servitude, she takes it, although it means travelling with Prince Alaric, with whom she shares a romantic history that ended badly. Her task is to escort him from Miami to New York, and the journey is far from simple.

George, the pygmy dragon, is an absolute delight. Britt found him injured and missing an eye during a job, and after nursing him back to health, minus the eye she could not replace, they have been inseparable ever since.

George is protective of Britt, yet behaves like a mischievous child despite being a fully grown ‘pygmy dragon’, or so they believe. His cheeky nature brings warmth and humour to the story, and he is easily the number one favourite character in this book.

Prince Alaric is introduced as a charming playboy who enjoys his life by hosting parties at his royal residence in Miami. When Britt arrives with news that disrupts his celebration, he surprisingly leaves with her without much resistance, which shows that he still prioritises duty over pleasure.

However, apart from his good looks and a brief mention of his father’s distrust, we do not learn much about him. This makes it difficult to understand what drew Britt to him in the first place.

Fast-paced, full of action and rich in adventure. The journey from Miami to New York is far more complicated than it appears. Britt’s past catches up with her, forcing the group to split.

They encounter an ambitious group of children trying to build a new life in a wasteland filled with monsters, and they also have to take a detour and pay a visit to the opposition vampire house to prevent a war. There is never a dull moment.

The adventure forces Britt and Alaric into a temporary truce. As for the romance, we will have to continue reading the next book to see whether they can overcome their past and their status.

There is also the matter of the prophecy, and the question of whether the world will ever see the sun again after being shrouded in darkness for so long.

Red Rook

I thought my newfound freedom would allow me to shake off the stink of New York City and start a new life somewhere else, a place where nobody knows me as Death Bringer or Britt the Bloody. A place where I’m not associated with ridiculous prophecies.

Looks like fate has other plans.

When the city is attacked, I find myself on the wrong side of the border. The only option is to take up arms alongside my vampire overlords and fight my way out. It doesn’t help that Alaric is by my side, reminding me of exactly what I’d be leaving behind.

My instinct is to fight for myself—for survival—but at some point I realize I just might be fighting for a hell of a lot more.

Britt is torn between her desire for freedom and her instinct to protect Alaric, constantly worrying about his safety. With the prophecy still hanging over her and the wizard Alaric trusts potentially willing to cause harm in order to bring the sun back, she decides to stay a little longer, just until she is certain of what is truly happening.

This second book is not as gripping for me as the first, but the pace picks up after the halfway point. We venture into dangerous territory, although I was a little disappointed that there was not much adventure involving her sidekick, George.

Even so, I love that characters from the previous series make appearances here. The Knights of Boudica return, as does Princess Davina, and we receive a little bit of an update on what has been happening to her.

The way the story is progressing, it seems clear that both Britt and London Hayes are tied to the prophecy. I imagine the main characters from the next series, Midnight Empire: New Dawn, will also be connected, which is exciting.

Glass King

I didn’t ask to be part of a prophecy, and I certainly didn’t ask to be held captive by zealots. They may call me a savior, but they treat me like a sacrifice they’re waiting to make to the gods. Not much of a sacrifice given what they think of me.

My only saving grace is that I don’t have to face the dangers alone. This time I have an ally in the form of a knight from Britannia City—London Hayes. Unfortunately, nobody knows where we are or what the group intends to do with us, which means we’re on our own.

Meanwhile, there are larger forces at work that threaten to tilt our vampire-ruled world on its axis, and it’s up to us to stop them—if we can escape our captors in time.

Britt and London have been kidnapped! Both of them are part of the prophecy that will bring the sun back, and neither intends to sit idle and be sacrificed. Their adventure begins as they set out to find the dagger meant to be used on them. Better to have the weapon in their possession than leave it out in the open for others to use.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading their journey and watching them team up. It was brilliant! We already know what London is capable of, so pairing these two heroines together made the story even more exciting and satisfying. The third series set in this world, Midnight Empire: New Dawn, is definitely on my radar. I hope to see Britt and London join forces with the third heroine. I really hope that’s the direction the story takes. 🤞

If you enjoy a story set in a post‑apocalyptic United States, you will love this series. It will appeal to readers who like a world filled with supernatural creatures and a challenging adventure led by two kick‑ass characters.
