Of Witch’s Blood

Seventeen-year-old Piper Ward isn’t new to the world of the supernatural. She comes from a long line of Cloaking Witches and lives in the city of Newvale, a supernatural mecca. However, when her crush reveals his mystical roots, Piper discovers there is one supernatural breed she hasn’t encountered.

Tristan Jarek is part of a tribe long ago forgotten, one whose magical abilities were stolen seven years ago. Having been separated from their magic for so long, the tribe is faced with a crippling reality—it’s dying.

As more to the story of Tristan’s magic is revealed, Piper becomes faced with a decision: let an entire breed of supernaturals die out, or give them the one thing that will save them—her blood.

Of Witch’s Blood is the first installment of an all new Mature Young Adult series from Jennifer Snyder, blending urban fantasy and paranormal romance together to create a tale of magic, first love, and inner strength.

My thoughts…

Leaving behind the Mirror Lake world, I found myself a bit lost at the beginning of the story with the new world and the characters’ introduction. There are more supernatural types introduced in this first book, and a bunch of them are in school! Thankfully, they still kept it secret in human eyes.

Piper, the main character, knew what she wanted. She wouldn’t let her overprotective brother, Jasper stop her from her most anticipated first date, which leads to the event of a shock revelation about her crush Tristan.

I didn’t read the book’s synopsis. Therefore, I didn’t know about Tristan. However, upon learning about Piper’s bucket list, I knew she would fulfil her wish to meet the species. There were also so many other predictable plots; another one was the event leading to her parents’ death; I knew from the start that it was all connected. Nevertheless, the story was still enjoyable 😙.

Of Breath & Soul

When Piper Ward agreed to help Tristan and his tribe of dragons regain their magic, she never considered the target she’d be placing on her back. After a spooky warning, and barely surviving an attack, she quickly realizes the Vodun witches mean business.

They want her dead, and they will do anything to see it happen—even resort to killing those she loves.

Book two in the Ward Witches series, Of Breath and Soul, continues the journey of Piper and Tristan, along with friends and family, as they set out to locate the mirror harbouring the magic of the dragons. Lives will be lost, morals will be tested, and an alliance with a powerful witch will prove to be essential in this exciting follow-up to Jennifer Snyder’s novel, Of Witch’s Blood

My thoughts…

No cliffhanger for me when I finished book one because I knew about the crows! Learned about them from the previous series I read, Mirror Lake Witches. They have a name for it in that series, but not on this one. However, they still deliver the same result. As for this book, there’s no cliffhanger, and the author included two chapters to read as well.

More emotion is at play in this book. One moment I was angry with Tristan and Piper for their reckless actions, and then when something happened to their team members, it made me sad. Overall, a smooth storyline.

I was quite suspicious of Liam from the beginning, and towards the end of the story, it only strengthened my suspicion. I can’t wait to find out if my theory is correct, and I’m also excited to find out how they will save the dying breed.

Of Time & Spells

In the beginning, all Piper wanted was to help the tribe of dragons Tristan belonged to reclaim their magic, that is until she learned the same witches were responsible for their loss were also responsible for the death of her parents.

Fueled by a desire for revenge and determination to free the dragon magic before it’s too late, Piper and the others find themselves going head-to-head against the biggest evil they’ve ever known.

A battle against evil. A house of tricks. A race against time. Find out how Piper and Tristan’s story ends in the conclusion to Jennifer Snyder’s Ward Witches series, Of Time & Spells.

My thoughts…

Sad to say, I was not too fond of the ending. Besides the apparent reason – No HEA for all, I thought the final battle against Vodun witches wasn’t challenging enough. With help from an unexpected ally, the witches were taken down pretty quickly. The only part that I enjoyed was the scenes where they were trapped and trying to figure a way out from the evil house.

Another thing I noticed about this book was the inconsistency in the story. The group was supposed to be overprotective towards Piper, but I didn’t get the feeling in some scenes. For example, while on the road trip to New Orleans, Piper went alone to the toilet to change her bloody shirt. Also, the moment when they have to walk on foot, abandoning their car.

Tristen shouldn’t need to call the other group to wait up; they should have automatically waited up or come to her to protect her. Want another one? The scenes where she went to the car to get Anna. If she’s that precious, they shouldn’t have asked her for that task; others could do it!

Anyway, I didn’t realize that this series was a spin-off of the Succubus Kiss series. I should have read that one first. But, it is never too late to start reading it, right? Hopefully, it will be better than this one 🙂.
