Wyrd Blood
Sometimes I wonder what life was like before magic burst into existence, before the Magical War of 810 destroyed our world. What it was like before there were Wyrd Blood, or we were forced into hiding. And that’s what I’ve been doing for years, hiding me and my crew. But that’s about to end.
My crew is starving, and things are getting dire. When I get desperate enough to try and steal from Ryker, one of the toughest men in these parts, things go bad, and my Wyrd Blood origins are outed. But it’s not all bad. Ryker can help keep me alive from the mysterious illness that’s been plaguing me. He can also feed my crew.
The only thing I have to do in return is start another war.
My thoughts…
Like a dwindling fire left untended, the story burned brightly at first before sputtering into disappointment.
I was initially captivated by Bugs’ adventure, thrilled by her magical ability, her vital role within the crew, and the intrigue of her mysterious identity. The early promises of fantasy and excitement hooked me. But as the story progressed, the characters’ behaviour dragged it down. Bugs, in particular, became unbearable with her frustrating decisions and immaturity, and my enthusiasm waned.
Even the supporting characters, namely Ryker, Burn, and Sneak, felt recycled, mirroring their counterparts from the Ollie Wit series with little variation. It’s as if they were simply transplanted into a new setting without fresh depth.
Still, I’ll give the rest of the series a chance, after all, I already own the books. Here’s hoping the next instalments reignite the spark I felt at the beginning. 🤞
Full Blood
One monster wants my soul. One man wants my magic. Me? I want to be left alone to live my life out like a dull, one of the lucky people who were born devoid of magic. But that won’t happen because being born a Wyrd Blood gives me two choices in ruler or slave. I’d rather die than be a slave, and I’m not cut out to rule.
Instead, I’ve been hiding out in the Valley. Life is pretty good here, with food in my belly and a warm bed to sleep. If I didn’t get harassed constantly by Ryker, the man who wants my magic, it might be good enough to lull me into thinking life could continue on like this forever.
Until I get a message from Bones, the monster who owns my soul…
My thoughts…
Something’s off about Bugs. Her behaviour frustrates me. It’s not how a logical person would act, especially in crucial moments. Take Ruck’s injury, for example. Instead of demanding answers, Bugs wandered off for hours, spiralling into morbid what-ifs.
And when Ruck finally woke up? She didn’t even care to ask. No, she made it all about her, unloading her own emotional baggage like Ruck had just woken up from sleep and not nearly die! 🤬
Aside from the issue with Bugs’ mentality, book two ended with so many questions unanswered. I’m counting on book three to deliver satisfying explanations. If these unresolved plots turn out to be nothing more than filler, I’ll be seriously disappointed!
Blood Binds
Ryker calls it an accident. I call it another betrayal. He didn’t want me to leave, but didn’t fight to keep me by his side. Wronged magically and devastated emotionally, I exile myself to another country, Dorley.
Now I perform tricks under a tent, my mystical gifts a common sideshow. Just as I’m accepting my self-inflicted fate, Ryker makes a move that forces me back to the Valley.
But an ancient evil is stirring and follows me. With magical stones disappearing, the power I possess within makes me a target. Old hurts have to be put aside, and enemies must unite, or an evil strong enough to destroy us all will be unleashed.
My thoughts…
Final Thoughts on Bugs: I still can’t fully warm up to her. Her behaviour just rubs me the wrong way. I prefer badass heroines, not ones who keep thinking of fleeing when something is wrong.
She reminds me of Dahlia and Ollie from The Wilds and Ollie Wit series, characters who also constantly evade their romantic interests rather than confronting them head-on.
That said, if you enjoyed those series, you may like this one as well. It hits the same notes from start to finish. Focus more on romance and less on world-building or action.😐
