Wild One

Some think seeing into the future, even if it’s death, is a gift. For me, it has always been a curse. Magic rules this new world, and my form of it is no blessing. Neither are the walls around me that I’ve been told are for my protection. If there is anything more cruel or vicious in the Wilds than what I’ve experienced here, I can’t imagine it.

After being sold to the highest bidder, a more ruthless monster than the one who controls me is looming. My life is on the razor’s edge of disaster and about to get worse until I’m broken free, aided by one of the most unlikely allies that roam the Wilds.

I’m willing to do the unthinkable and imprison another to remain free. But now my new master is hunting me, and the one I’ve trapped is all that stands between me and an existence more horrific than death.

Teddy’s mother is a Plaguer, someone who contracted the Bloody Death, a virus that wiped out most of the human race and survived. Being born to a mother like hers means Teddy inherits a special ability. She possesses what they call death sight; she can see when someone is going to die and how it will happen.

Her mother abandons her at birth, and since then, Teddy has lived in a nightmare. Instead of being treated as someone extraordinary, she is tortured. Years of abuse harden her, and she becomes determined to escape one day with her best friend, Tuesday.

When she is sold to the magician, a powerful being with huge influence over the remaining civilisation, she is taken away by a beast and eventually joins a mysterious band of people. They are clearly hiding something, and Teddy is bound to uncover it after she ties herself with the group’s leader, Callon.

Teddy’s determination and spirit, despite being broken and rebuilt, are admirable. Her stubbornness sometimes irks me, and the lack of communication between Callon and Teddy creates unnecessary tension that could have been avoided if they were willing to set aside their egos. That is how the story unfolds; some readers will love it while others may find it frustrating.

Meanwhile, Tuesday and Koz are adorable together. I like that Teddy has someone she can confide in and that Tuesday truly understands her struggles and her past.

There is something odd about the mud that keeps following Teddy. It feels significant, but it is not explained by the end of the story, and I hope the second book explores it further.

Overall, I feel a bit disappointed because this is not a continuation of any characters I know from the Wilds series. I expected it to follow Dal and Dax’s son or perhaps even Tiffy!

Savage One

Death isn’t as black and white as they say, at least not for me. I can tell you when you’ll die and pull you back from the brink of death. In a world ravaged by plague, where survival might come down to the smallest misstep, I can help you cheat fate. If only I could save myself…

I’ve been abused and abandoned, bartered and paid for. The only reason I’m alive right now is a man named Callon, who I managed to trick into sticking by me. But things are looking up when my last purchaser calls for a truce, and I land a nice, comfy place to live.

Except when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. There is a larger threat lurking that no one sees, and it’s about to wipe out the lodge in order to get to me. In a world torn apart by wars and sickness, a safe place to lay your head is hard to find, and I won’t go down without a fight.

Earlier, I said I was a little disappointed that the story didn’t follow any of the old characters from the Wilds series. Well, well, well, would you look at that! This second book gave me exactly what I was hoping for.

It answered questions I’ve had since finishing the Magic, the last book from the Wilds series. According to Tiffy, Dal was pregnant with a baby boy, and now I finally know what happened to him. I have to admit, it wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t pretty.

As for the ending, it’s classic for this author. She sticks to her formula: slow burn, enemies-to-lovers tension, loyal friends, and ends with a sweet wrap-up. It’s predictable, but comforting in its own way.

I’m also satisfied that the mystery of the mud following Teddy was finally explained. That part felt complete. But the Magician? Honestly, a bit anticlimactic. After all the buildup, I thought he’d be the central threat. Turns out, not so much.

If you love the Wilds series, you ought to check this series out.
