A Shimmer of Angels

Sixteen-year-old Rayna sees angels, and has the medication and weekly therapy sessions to prove it. Now, in remission, Rayna starts fresh at a new school, lands a new job, and desperately tries for normalcy. She ignores signs that she may be slipping into the world she has tried so hard to climb out of.

But these days, it’s more than just hallucinations that keep Rayna up at night. Students are dying, and she may be the only one who can stop it. Can she keep her job, her sanity, and her friends from dying at the hands of angels she can’t admit to seeing?

This is my first time reading a book by this author. The plotline reminds me of another book about angels that I’ve read before, featuring both good and bad angels, along with a protagonist who has special abilities. So, I kind of feel like I know how the story will end.

But I do like that when confronted with the evidence, the protagonist, Rayna, doesn’t hastily accept the reality of Angel’s existence. Additionally, we get insights into her experiences aboard the SS Crazy. However, her clumsiness did annoy me at times, and Roxy’s Diner certainly serves as a setting that amplifies her clumsiness.

Let’s find out if the upcoming books will uncover more about the Angel hierarchy or if Cam will continue to serve as the intermediary among them. I also hope the past story involving Kade and Rayna’s mother will be explored, as well as, more significantly, how Rayna acquires her seer abilities.

In summary, it’s a light-reading story that features elements of forbidden love and high school dramas, along with mentions of suicide and blood.

A Slither of Hope

Rayna struggles to piece her life back together, but hiding in plain sight from the police, the SS Crazy, and the Fallen isn’t a foolproof plan—something Kade, the World’s Worst Roommate, reminds her of everyday.

The late nights of failing to teach Ray how to protect herself against the Fallen are getting to Kade, changing him in ways he doesn’t like, and after a family emergency sends Ray back into Cam’s arms, Kade decides he’s had enough.

News of Rayna’s resurfacing brings both angels and the Fallen to San Francisco by the dozens, all eyes scouring the city for the girl with the gray wings. Rayna will need both Kade and Cam’s help to ensure her family’s safety, navigate the new dangers and enemies springing up all over the city, and manage the surprises that arise with her new set of wings.

Well, this is definitely an improvement! I like that this book has more action compared to the previous one. It’s fun to read about the potential of her new powers and her determination to learn to defend herself.

Additionally, this instalment provides insight into her background and offers a broader perspective on the overall story. However, I still find her clumsiness and some of her decisions frustrating. She tends to act impulsively and recklessly!

I wish the character was not a 16-year-old but rather a more mature age lady. I can’t help but wonder what Cam and Kade find appealing about her! If she ends up with either of them, I certainly hope it’s Kade, given all he’s done for her.

Regardless, I perceive a theme of mental health disorder throughout this series. The first book dealt with schizophrenia, which Rayna has moved past, and the second book focuses on PTSD. I’m curious to see what the next book will explore.

A Matter of Time

Rayna and Kade went to Hell to save one another . . .  but both failed. Now, centuries of Kade’s demons are unearthed when he is brainwashed and used as a Fallen pawn. In the freezing pits of Hell, Ray is beaten, tortured, and pushed to her breaking point. If Ray is to ever leave, she must take a stand and fire back at her attackers even though she is only now beginning to understand the true strength of her wings.

This action-packed book kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The intense scenes and heart-pounding moments made it impossible to put down.

My favourite parts were definitely the scenes featuring Rayna and Kade in Hell. What Rayna had to face in this dark, fiery realm was painful.

As the story builds to the final battle to defeat the fallen angels, you can’t help but be sucked into the chaos of it all. While the ending follows the usual hero’s triumph over evil, it leaves you with a huge sense of uncertainty.

The future of the heroine, Rayna, is left hanging—will she live a long life, or is her fate sealed? It’s incredibly frustrating to be left with such an open-ended conclusion, especially after investing so much in the characters and their journey.

The lack of closure is both unsettling and thought-provoking, making you question what comes next for Rayna. As a result, this series deserves only 3.5 stars.
