Emerge

Emerge by Tobie Easton

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid but she’s never lived in the ocean. War has ravaged the seven seas ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality.

Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check.

Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia’s entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?

That is, until Lia finds out she isn’t the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn’t realize the danger he’s in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay.

Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

My thoughts…

The storyline in this book is unique and refreshing. It almost feels like I’m reading a sequel to the Little Mermaid story, albeit with a different ending. We get to know what happens to the Mermaid descendants and the curse they have to bear.

Lia and her family migrated to the land, trying their best to coexist among the humans. Her parents are the top cheese in their newly built society, and they are the role models. Every choice she makes will significantly affect her family. When a human boy is in danger, Lia will have to make a tough choice, including breaking all the rules.

There was a moment I couldn’t bear to continue reading the book. Dreading to find out the aftermath of Lia’s decision, and when she continued repeating the action, over and over again. I was mentally shouting at her to stop it and let her family know. It was exhilarating and also nerve-wracking.

Nevertheless, I can’t wait to read the next book and find out what else is in store for her. Are the villains going to expose her wrongdoing? What about Caspian? He seems interested in Lia, and I would love him to have his happy ending too.

Submerge

Submerge by Tobie Easton

Lia and Clay’s love has broken the Little Mermaid’s curse, but their ever after may not be as happy as they planned. Lia is adamant about staying on land with Clay for her senior year despite her family’s opportunity to move to the new, sparkling capital city below the waves.

Before any decision about the future can be made, her family must endure Melusine and her father’s trial, where new revelations will have far-reaching consequences that threaten what Lia holds most dear. The verdict will shake Lia’s whole world, calling into question her future with Clay, her feelings for Caspian, and the fate of all Merkind.

As she wonders whom to trust, Lia sets out on a treacherous path that will lead her away from her sheltered Malibu home to a remote and mysterious school for Mermaids—Mermaids who may hold the secret to ancient magic Lia can use to either get back all she’s lost or embark on a thrilling and dangerous journey where only she can define her fate.

My thoughts…

After breaking the two centuries curse and restoring immortality to all the Mer, one will think that Lia and Clay deserve to enjoy their relationship as a token of appreciation. But that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. There’s a trial they both have to attend, which will determine the course of their future.

There’s so much sadness and desperation in this story. While Lia’s future seems bleak, Caspian is finally brave enough to open up to Lia, but only to be thawed by the determination in Lia, clinging to the fragile thread of hope that one day she could find a way to be reunited with Clay.

So far, what I liked about the story, besides the storylines, was the way the author emphasised the situation by using unique phrases.  I find them very fitting in Mer world because all the references were related to the underwater world. Hence, I would like to praise the author for being creative and thinking like merfolk.

Immerse

Immerse by Tobie Easton

Immerse is the spellbinding and breathless final installment of the Mer Chronicles series where descendants of the Little Mermaid must face deadly magic, shifting alliances, and the dangers of forbidden love.

Lia can’t wait for her parents’ coronation. Now living in the sparkling palace beneath the waves, she sneaks off to Malibu whenever possible to see Clay. Tucked away in an abandoned seaside mansion, Lia and Clay devise a plan to ensure they can stay together forever.

But when an old enemy resurfaces and Lia is restricted to the palace for the safety of all Merkind, she and Clay are ripped apart once more.

She fears not only for Clay, but for her best friend Caspian, who seems to be swimming down a dangerous path. He has invited the conniving Melusine to the coronation ball, convinced she’s capable of change. And no matter how hard Lia fights it, showing up on Caspian’s arm is just the start of Melusine’s insidious return to her life.

With threats Below growing more ominous by the day and a powerful ancient ritual looming, soon the two girls can’t escape each other. As their fates grow increasingly intertwined, Melusine might be the only one who can help Lia find the answers she desperately needs to save everyone she loves and to achieve her happily ever after. But can Lia trust her?

My thoughts…

Immerse yourself in this final book, a thrilling conclusion to the Mer Chronicles! This book tells stories from Lia and Melusine’s point of view. It’s interesting to dwell inside the character’s mind, one we see as a villain.

From the first moment I read about Melusine and her punishment, I always had the nagging feeling that she would be playing a significant role in the story. And I have been wondering why she didn’t reveal Lia’s secret, whether she was beyond redemption, and if her father would retaliate.

I got all the answers in this book, plus an unexpected adventure, revelation and most importantly, a happy ending! Tallimymee, Tobie, for creating such an incredible story. I’ll miss the underwater world, but with the way it finished, it’s opening up for the possibility of a sequel to this series! Where did you go, Ondine?
